Problem
You are attempting to use the QuickSearch feature and receive the following error message:
Solution
The most common reason for this error message is a file permission problem on the QuickSearch index file or a corrupted index file. Set your PC to Show Hidden Files and Folders and also to Show Filename Extensions before beginning to troubleshoot this issue. If you are not familiar with some of the below steps and have access to a company provided IT service it may be best to involve them or feel free to contact Support for direct assistance. You will need to be a local admin to the PC to carry out some of the below steps.
Verify and Fix the File Permissions
Start by verifying proper permissions to the CAPQuickSearch.idx file. This file will be located in the C:\ProgramData\CAP\Content directory.
Right click on the file and choose Properties.
Then select the Security tab.
If the security tab reports "You must have Read permissions to view the properties of this object" and looks like the image below, then this is the problem. You will need to take ownership of the file and give full permission to the file. We usually assign "Everyone" full control to the file to resolve the issue. You can follow the remainder of the steps below to attempt to correct the problem.
Click the Advanced button in the lower right.
On the Advanced Security Settings for CAPQuickSearch.idx click the Change link.
On the Select User or Group dialog, click the Locations... button.
In the locations dialog, select the topmost entry - this should have an icon of a PC next to it which designates the local machine - and then click OK
Now type the word Everyone in the Enter the object name to select box and then click the Check Names Button. If everything is good the word Everyone should become underlined as seen in the image below.
Click the OK button, and then click the OK button on the other dialog thus closing all currently open dialog windows.
Now right click on the CAPQuickSearch.idx file again and choose properties.
Click back to the Security Tab. The permissions of the file should now appear similar to the below image.
Click the Edit... button.
Then on the Permissions for CAPQuickSearch.idx dialog, click the Add... button.
Then on the Select Users or Groups dialog click the Locations... button.
Again select the topmost entry in the locations list - it should have an Icon for a PC - and click OK.
Type Everyone in the "Enter the object names to select" box and then click Check Names.
An underline should then appear under the word Everyone. Click the OK button.
Now back on the Permission for CAPQuickSearch.idx dialog - Select Everyone in the Group or user names section.
Then put a check mark for Full Control in the Allow column. It should look like the below image.
Then click Apply and Ok.
You may now test if the QuickSearch feature in the application is working correctly.
If you still get the error message, then the issue could be that the QuickSearch index file itself is just corrupted and needs to be rebuilt. Proceed to the next section below to try rebuilding a new index file.
Rebuilding a New CAP QuickSearch File
- Fully exit all Applications.
- Navigate to directory C:\ProgramData\CAP\Content
- Delete the CAPQuickSearch.idx file.
- Open Worksheet.
- Attempt to use the QuickSearch Feature.
You should get a message saying The QuickSearch index file does not exist. Would you like to create it now?

- This will begin the rebuild process. You should see a dialog box in the lower right corner of the progress. This will take time depending on the amount of catalogs you have installed. Could take up to an hour if all content is installed.
- Once the process is finished, exit and restart Worksheet.
- Test if the QuickSearch feature is now working without error message.
